T.O.P.S. (Training Of Promoters and Storytellers)

Want to make a positive difference
in the lives of kids and communities?

A positive tide is rising. Across Alaska people are talking about what they each can do to grow
successful, responsible, caring, and resilient children and youth.

Asset building is not a program. It builds on the positive relationships and common sense ideas already present in each community. Some of the basic principles of asset building in our children's lives include:
1) it’s about relationships,
2) small things count, and
3) everyone can be important asset builders.

The more assets a child has, the more likely they will be to engage in healthy behaviors and the less likely they will be to engage in unhealthy behaviors.

This TOPS will provide you with:

• the background information and research needed to validate the developmental assets framework and understanding as to how it relates to student achievement

• copies of the Helping Kids Succeed – Alaska Style book and other resources

• methods of conveying the power of the framework to an audience

• a network of asset building promoters and storytellers to share insights and ideas

• a synopsis of what is currently happening to build assets in Alaska

• a vision of the direction Alaskans are heading

(Plus it will be lots of fun!)

There is increasing demand for more community and school presentations on asset building. Our Alaskanized, interactive presentations are designed to educe the asset framework from participants and assist people in intentionally building assets in children and youth immediately.

The Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB), through the Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement (Alaska ICE), continues to deliver two-day T.O.P.S. Our goal is to provide participants with the necessary information and tools to promote workshops, seminars, presentations, and share overviews on the Assets Framework. These trainings are the basis for leading such workshops and integrating them into what you already do with children, teens and families in your community.

To register for this training or to arrange a TOPS for your community, please contact
Suzie Gaffney at 586-1486.

Looking for academic credits? This workshop is also associated with ED 597 Resilient Youth: Building Assets, a three credit, pass/no pass course available through Alaska Pacific University and the Alaska Staff Development Network. For more information, contact ASDN at (907) 364-3809 or asdn@ptialaska.net .

The fee for this two-day workshop is $199, and checks made payable to A.A.S.B. can be mailed to:
