Murkowski Takes Lead To Praise America’s Teachers
Senator Meets With Alaska’s Teacher of the Year
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A resolution honoring American teachers co-sponsored by Senator Lisa Murkowski unanimously passed the U.S. Senate. “I still remember Mrs. Buness, my 1st grade teacher in Wrangell who instilled in me a love for learning,” Murkowski said. “America’s children are being empowered every day by their teachers to think deeply about the world around them and become the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.”
Senator Murkowski was the lead Republican co-sponsor for the Teacher Appreciation Week resolution put forward by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) to honor America’s educators for their contribution to communities nationwide. The National PTA originally designated the first calendar week in May as Teacher Appreciation Week in 1958.
Senator Murkowski added “As the school year begins to draw to a close in Alaska and across the country, I call on Alaskans to take a moment to thank the teachers who have made a positive difference in their lives and the lives of their children.”
Senator Murkowski met with Alaska’s Teacher of the Year Lorrie Heagy. Heagy is the librarian and music teacher at Glacier Valley Elementary in Juneau. (Senator Murkowski attended 5th and 6th grade at G.V. elementary)
2011 AASB Education Priorities
Following our Annual Conference, the Board of Directors identified priority resolutions for 2011 under four broad categories: Innovation for Student Success, Career-Technical Education, Early Childhood Development and Funding. The document collects those priorities and links them to resolutions approved by the membership at our business meeting on Nov. 14. I am sending them to you now as a reference for our efforts in the Alaska Legislature and Congress in the coming year. We will undoubtedly add to these priorities depending on how issues develop in the weeks ahead.
A full compilation of resolutions approved by the membership, a document called "Where We Stand," is available on our website.

Educator/filmmaker Marco Torres energized educators with his message of using technology to empower students and expand the boundaries of learning. In this video Marco shares his own reflections about the AASB conference and challenges other attendees to share theirs. If you attended this year's annual conference, we invite you to post your thoughts about the event here on the AASB Forum in text, audio or video form. Your collective observations will help to shape future conferences.
The AASB Forum is a way for school board members, students, and communities to connect, share ideas, voice opinions, and pose questions regarding Alaska public education. We invite you to initiate thoughtful discussion, and participate in threads started by AASB staff and other advocates for Alaska's children and youth.
