Youth Advocacy Institute
The YAI was filled with activities and presentations aimed at introducing students to the process of how a bill becomes a law, researching legislative information online with BASIS, and understanding how legislation works.
Students held a mock committee meeting, toured the Capitol building, and were visited by Representatives Beth Kerttula and Cathy Munoz, who answered questions about the political process and explained their duties as legislators. Young adult members of the Conference of Young Alaskans (COYA) steering committee also visited the YAI and shared information about COYA and the importance of youth leadership and community involvement. In addition to YAI-specific meetings, students also joined Board members and their agenda.
