2010 June Nelson Memorial Scholarship Winners 

AASB is pleased to announce the winners of the 19th Annual June Nelson Memorial Scholarship. We evaluated 63 applications from students with diverse backgrounds from around the state, and were blown away by the skills, local involvement, and promise each showed with their essays and application materials. Each student will receive $1,000 toward their post-secondary education. The scholarship may be applied toward the student’s choice of a business, trade, or college institution.

AASB's 56th Annual Conference

Sparking Student Success was the theme of AASB's 2009 Annual Conference, held Nov. 5-8 in Anchorage. Keynote speakers Willie Hensley and Frank Kros led a talented and dedicated group of education leaders offering insights and information to our school board members in attendance.

AASB's Spring Academy and Legislative Fly-In

The Spring Academy and Legislative Fly-in took place in Juneau at the Baranof Hotel, March 28-31, 2009. Subjects covered at the academy included early childhood education, vocational skills needed for today's workforce, and the impacts of distance delivery educational programs.  The Fly-in focused on issues affecting education in 2009, meeting with legislators, and legislation impacting individual districts.

AASB's 2009 Leadership Conference, Legislative Fly-In, and Youth Advocacy Institute

The meetings were held at the Baranof Hotel in Juneau from Feb. 7 - 10. Topics such as parliamentary procedure, leadership roles on boards, issues effecting education in 2009, and the impacts of new legislation on school districts were discussed. Youth and adult attendees also had the opportunity to meet with legislators and other decision makers.

AASB's 2008 Winter Boardsmanship Academy

The academy was held at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage, Dec. 11-12. The theme of the academy was negotiations and workshop topics included: the board's role, the collective bargaining process, what to do in a labor dispute, and understanding the overall negotiations process.

AASB’s 55th Annual Conference a Success

Innovation was at the center of AASB’s 55th Annual Conference, where featured speakers Dr. Donna Beagle and Marco Torres headlined a packed list of education leaders offering insight for school board members. The state’s largest education conference, under the theme “Building Alaska’s Innovation Pipeline,” ran Nov. 6-9, 2008 at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage.
