AASB SUPPORT OPPORTUNITIES
How Your Organization Can Directly Benefit Alaska Education
Here are four ways to directly benefit Alaska education through established AASB programs. Levels of support can be scaled to match your organization’s contribution requirements.
1) CONSORTIUM FOR DIGITAL LEARNING
Direct Education Benefits
Students learn better when they are engaged and research about what engages them points to technology. Educators, students and parents involved with the Consortium for Digital Learning (CDL) acknowledge the initiative’s effectiveness in engaging students, improving academic performance and instilling 21st century skills necessary for success in the global economy.
AASB Support Opportunities
CDL projects are partnerships between a financial donor and a school district. A donor typically provides 2/3 of the total cost of initiating a four-year 1 to 1 digital learning project, with 1/3 provided by the participating school district. The following examples illustrate potential 2/3 contribution opportunities:
Classroom - A contribution of $50,000 supports a class of 30 students.
Grade Level - A contribution of $170,000 supports a total grade of 100 students.
School - A contribution of $500,000 supports a school of 300 students.
2) SCHOOL BOARD AND YOUTH LEADERSHIP PREPARATION
Direct Education Benefits
With over $1 billion in state funds devoted to K-12 education each year, local control of education through 53 elected school boards requires keen vision, strong structure, accountability, advocacy, and ethical conduct. AASB training programs help instill those standards in board members. Our Youth Leadership programs connect young Alaskans with adult mentors and offer opportunities for learning new skills in civics and communication.
AASB Support Opportunity
School Board & Youth Leadership: An annual contribution of $4,500 can help 10 school board members or 20 young Alaskans obtain valuable training at the AASB Annual Conference.
3) CLIMATE CHANGE FOR THE GOOD!
Direct Education Benefits
AASB believes that climate change is a positive development when it means better schools and healthier communities. The youth advocacy arm of AASB, The Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement (Alaska ICE), is founded on the principle that support for our children and youth is a shared responsibility. Healthy communities beget healthy schools and kids. Alaska ICE helps families, educators, businesses and many other groups build supports for kids. Trained community members use the research-based Developmental Assets (trademark) framework, traditional Native values and common-sense, practical approaches to build community engagement in the lives of children.
AASB Support Opportunity
A contribution of $1,000 can help bring a Community Night to a school district.
A contribution of $500 can help underwrite an edition of Kids These Days.
4) JUNE NELSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Direct Education Benefits
Ten successful applicants each receive $1000 scholarships to help pay for costs associated with attending the postsecondary education institution of their choice. Students applying for the annual scholarships must write a persuasive essay and provide examples of their involvement in community, leadership, student and cultural activities.
AASB Support Opportunity
An annual contribution of $10,000 can assist ten Alaska high school graduates to seek higher education opportunities each year.
