Charter Schools in Alaska

Charter Schools in Alaska are public schools, approved by their local school district and the State of Alaska, that offer alternative teaching methods or curriculum.

Unlike charter schools in many other states, Alaska’s charter schools are not independent of the public school system—they are fully integrated into local school districts. This means they are funded by the state, follow state academic standards, and are accountable to their district school boards.

Each Alaska charter school is governed by an Academic Policy Committee (APC), a group of parents, teachers, and community members. The APC functions much like a local school board, overseeing the school’s mission, budget, curriculum, and staffing decisions within the framework of district and state policy.
