The Association of Alaska School Boards has declared February to be School Board Appreciation Month!
Initiated by the National School Boards Association in 1995, 2026 marks the 31st anniversary of School Board Recognition Month. The goal is to build awareness and understanding in your community and schools of the crucial function an elected school board plays in a representative democracy.
As citizen advocates, individual board members face a complex and demanding job; yet few people fully understand the scope and far-reaching implications of board members’ responsibilities.
This month, we ask all Alaska citizens to recognize the important contributions of our board members and focus attention on the vital role these public officials play in the education of our children.
Ways to show appreciation include:
- Attending a school board meeting and thanking members for their service
- Writing a letter or email expressing gratitude
- Sharing positive stories about your school board on social media
- Recognizing board members in local newspapers or community newsletters
- Organizing a small recognition event or reception
- Simply saying “thank you” when you see a board member in your community
To Alaska’s school board members: Your commitment to public service, your countless hours of work, and your dedication to student success often go unnoticed. This month, we honor your service and thank you for your leadership, vision, and advocacy for Alaska’s students.
