How do your local candidates view Alaska’s public education system?
The following sample questions cover a range of critical areas and are consistent with AASB legislative priorities. Your engagement in asking questions like these will help to ensure that legislators are aware of the challenges facing Alaska’s public schools and are prepared to advocate for policies that support a strong and equitable education system.
Public Education Funding
Do you support efforts to increase the Base Student Allocation (BSA)? Considering the impact of inflation since the last major increase in FY2017, how do you justify your support or opposition? What are the key factors influencing your position?
Teacher and Staff Retention and Recruitment
How would you describe the factors or benefits in your school district that are most likely to improve the retention of experienced teachers, and what strategies or policies would you support to recruit new teachers?
Student Wellness and School Safety
What measures do you propose or support to enhance and fund mental health services for Alaskan students, especially those impacted by trauma and poverty? How would you prioritize and implement these measures?
Community Engagement
What is your perspective on the role of schools in promoting the well-being of communities? Can you elaborate on how you believe schools contribute to the overall health, safety, and prosperity of the areas they serve?
Constitutional Use of Public funds
Considering the Alaska Constitution states, “No money shall be paid from public funds for the direct benefit of any religious or other private educational institution,” and the ongoing legal debates, what is your view on using state funds for private or religious school tuition, and does it align or conflict with the Constitution?
