AASB and ACSA Affirms Every Child Counts

The Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) and the Alaska Council of School Administrators (ACSA) jointly affirm the belief that every child, no matter their circumstance, is and should be the priority of the State of Alaska. Together as statewide leaders, we must promote and ensure the care and education of all of Alaska’s children and youth so that they may realize their full potential and contribute to our common good.

In support of that ideal, the following AASB mission and beliefs statements reaffirm AASB’s commitment:

AASB’s Mission – To advocate for children and youth by assisting school boards in providing quality public education, focused on student achievement, through effective local governance.

Belief Statement #17 – DECLARING CHILDREN THE TOP PRIORITY OF ALASKA – AASB believes children are the top priority of our state. This declaration extends to the education, health, physical and psychological safety, mental wellness, and future of our children.

ACSA’s Highest Priority – Student achievement and well-being is our number one priority

Recent questions posed by an Alaska House of Representatives member during a House Judiciary Committee meeting this past week brought to light that at least one elected state official was willing to question the value of the lives of abused children versus the perceived economic benefit if those children were to perish and not require state support.

Jointly, as leaders of associations focused on the educational welfare and lifetime success of all of Alaska’s children and youth, we denounce such lines of inquiry and urge instead to embrace a view that all of Alaska’s children and youth are worthy of our support, love, and care.

Respectfully,

Lon D. Garrison
Executive Director
Association of Alaska School Boards

Dr. Lisa Skiles Parady
Executive Director
Alaska Council of School Administrators
