AASB’s Leadership Academy & Legislative Fly-In

for School Board Members & District Leaders

  • Friday, February, 9: Special Pre-Conference Session – Public Education Funding in Alaska. AASB is hosting a full-day focused on Public Funding in Alaska and the Concept of Adequacy moderated by John Sedor and led by a variety of experts.. This pre-conference session is Part 2 of AASB’s School Law & Policy Series. All are welcome to attend, whether or not you attended Part 1.
  • Saturday, February 10 – Sunday, February 11: Leadership Academy & Legislative Fly-In. Board members & district leaders will focus on advocacy training, reviewing legislation, and understanding the context of what is happening in the Capitol. 
  • Monday, February 12 – Tuesday, February 13: Meetings with Legislators. To ensure scheduled times to meet with your legislators, start making appointments NOW!

The registration fee for the pre-conference session and the Academy is $600.

Youth Advocacy Institute

for High School Students & Chaperones

  • Saturday, February 10 – Sunday, February 11: AASB’s Youth Advocacy Institute (YAI) is a unique opportunity for high school students from across Alaska to convene in Juneau once a year to learn advocacy skills, share their views on the building blocks for student success, and learn more about the legislature’s inner workings. Participants learn how a bill becomes a law, discuss key legislative issues influencing education this year, and participate in mock testimony. On Monday, February 12, and Tuesday, February 13, students will advocate alongside their school boards at the Capital. 

Please note that registration for the Youth Advocacy Institute (YAI) is only open to high school students from districts that will have school board members attending this year’s Legislative Fly-In (held the same weekend). 

  • One-site school districts may register up to 2 students and 1 chaperone
  • Multisite school districts may register up to 6 students (no more than 2 from one school) and 1 chaperone. 
  • Exceptions may be made to this policy on a case-by-case basis by AASB. This request must be made in writing by email to cplesa@nullaasb.org.

The registration fee for YAI students and chaperones is $360.
